Trees and shrubs make lovely additions to more extensive gardens. They provide shady areas where you and your family can lounge and gather. At the same time, they form a natural barrier between your home and your neighbors, giving you and your family privacy while you spend time in your garden.

Unfortunately, many people that choose to add trees and shrubs in their garden find themselves struggling to maintain them, much less keep them alive. Much of this is because of the mistakes they committed when they planted them.

4 Trees and Shrubs Planting Mistakes

1.Choosing the wrong trees and shrubs.

Palm trees and bamboo may look great in your backyard's overall design. However, many of these types of trees and shrubs aren't native in most parts of the country. That means that they need extra attention and care if you'd want them to grow.

Be sure to first consult with professional gardener in your area if you want to use these in your upcoming trees and shrub planting project. He or she can educate you just what you need to do for them to grow healthy, and make maintenance a breeze.

Your local gardener can also recommend you other trees and shrub that will give you a similar look in your garden, but easier to care and manage.

2.Planting trees and shrubs too close together.

Photos of trees and shrubs close to each other look really great. Often, those that are just starting out with gardening will try to achieve this look by planting their shrubs and trees very close to each other.

This trees and planting method may give you immediate results. But remember, trees and shrubs are larger plant species. If they are planted way too close to each other, they'll end up competing with each other for sunlight and nutrients.

That's why it's essential to make sure that there's ample space in between your trees and shrubs when you plant them. As they start growing, you'll find their branches will slowly close up the spaces between them, giving you that thick hedge you want.

3.Adding rocks near your shrubs and trees.

Believe it or not, many professional gardeners discourage their clients from accentuating the base of their shrubs and trees with rocks and large pebbles.

That's because their weight will compress the earth underneath it over time. So, while they look beautiful on the surface, the roots of your shrubs and trees underneath are being choked. Unless you relieve the pressure by taking these rocks and pebbles off, your shrubs and trees will die.

4.Too much pruning.

We've all heard how pruning trees and shrubs not only make your shrubs and trees look well-manicured, but also help them grow faster and produce more flowers (if they're the flowering type).

But too much of anything is bad. Each time that you prune your plant whether they're trees, shrubs, or potted herbs you're taking away copious amounts of leaves that produce the food they need to grow. Unless you give your plants time to recuperate and grow in between pruning sessions, they'll eventually start getting weak and slowly wither away.
